History and Development of River Bend Golf Course
From Founding to Modern Stewardship
by the Barnard Family
Early Beginnings and Original Purpose
River Bend Golf Course has its roots in a strategic vision for water management and regional development in Brownsville, Texas. The course’s land was originally owned by Rancho Viejo developer Ted Trap, who acquired River Bend specifically to connect Rancho Viejo to a raw water source from the Rio Grande River. This foundational link not only served practical needs but set the stage for the area’s recreational transformation.
Initial Development and Expansion
In 1983, River Bend’s development commenced under the leadership of Lou Falley, George Ketzenberg, and John Berryman. The trio established River Bend as a 9-hole golf course, quickly garnering interest from local golf enthusiasts and setting a new standard for leisure activities in the region. Recognizing its potential, the developers expanded River Bend in 1985, transforming it into an 18-hole Championship course. This expansion brought greater recognition to the venue and attracted more visitors, solidifying its role as a premier golfing destination in the Rio Grande Valley.
Transition to Barnard Family Ownership
A significant chapter in River Bend’s history began in 2015, when the Barnard Family purchased the course. The Barnards are well-established in the Rio Grande Valley, recognized for their long-standing ownership of Coastal Realty—the largest volume, full-service commercial real estate firm serving Cameron County. Since its founding in 1962, Coastal Realty has maintained a reputation for comprehensive service and extensive market knowledge, reflecting the Barnard family’s dedication to excellence and community engagement.
Coastal Realty: A Foundation of Local Expertise
As Brownsville natives, the Barnard family has infused Coastal Realty with a unique local perspective, enabling them to serve the diverse needs of the area with unparalleled insight. Their family-owned business model emphasizes personal relationships and a deep commitment to the community, attributes that have distinguished Coastal Realty for decades.
Ongoing Commitment and Vision for River Bend
Since acquiring River Bend, the Barnard family has worked tirelessly to enhance the golf course and raise the standard of golf in Brownsville. Their ongoing efforts reflect a broader commitment to regional improvement, combining their expertise in real estate with a passion for community recreation. Under their stewardship, River Bend continues to evolve, offering improved facilities and a welcoming atmosphere for golfers of all skill levels.
Conclusion
River Bend Golf Course’s journey from a strategic water link to a thriving championship venue mirrors the growth and development of Brownsville itself. Guided by visionary leaders and, more recently, the community-minded Barnard family, River Bend stands today as a testament to local history, dedication, and the enduring appeal of golf in the Rio Grande Valley.
